The Last Duel, Ridley Scott’s latest film, flopped at the box office. For its director, it is the fault of the “millennials” with their “damn smartphones”.

Currently in theaters, The Last Duel is a period film recounting the last “judicial duel” of the Middle Ages, with Matt Damon (Jason Bourne, Alone on Mars) taking on Adam Driver (Kylo Ren in Star Wars). If the film received excellent reviews, it nevertheless made an oven in cinemas, especially in the United States. 83-year-old director Ridley Scott blames young people and their phones for failure.

After “crappy” superhero films, Ridley Scott lashes out against millennials and Facebook

Alien, Blade Runner, Prometheus, Gladiator, Alone on Mars… Ridley Scott’s record is well established. The director, born in 1937, has a career in Hollywood which is admired by all young filmmakers who would like to follow in his footsteps. But this love does not seem reciprocal. Following the failure of his last film at the cinema, The Last Duel, Ridley Scott told Hollywood Reporter that it was ” the fault of the millennials (sic) and their fucking cell phones ». The director is not at his first coup. A few days ago, Scott had been even more violent towards the superhero movies, announcing: ” I’m gonna fuck them up, they fucking suck. We piss off to death ».

Besides that he does not know how to pronounce millenials (Scott said ” millennian ”In English), it’s a bit quick to blame the failure of your film on young viewers. The Last Duel is a dark and serious period film, released as the movie industry is still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. Even Marvel Studios movies are currently barely in theaters, and Scarlett Johansson has also sued Disney for broadcasting Black Widow both in theaters and on Disney +.

Global pandemic, streaming platforms… Is Ridley Scott the wrong target?

In his statement, the octogenarian director criticizes the lack of openness of today’s young people, because of which they would have abandoned his film. Ridley Scott explains in harsh words: “ I think what we have today is an audience that was raised with these fucking cell phones. Millennials (sic) never want to be taught anything, unless it’s through a cell phone. »

Even social networks are not spared : « I am enlarging the stroke, but I think this is exactly what we are facing right now with Facebook Added Ridley Scott. ” The last generation has gone in the wrong direction because of all this. The director seems to forget that his spectators are far from being all millenials, and that these, like the others, remain cautious about going to theaters during a health crisis.

In addition, more and more viewers are waiting for films to be released on streaming platforms to watch them. Even the blockbusters of Marvel are victims of this phenomenon of disaffection. Ridley Scott, who this month emphatically refused to give up filming Gladiator 2, would therefore perhaps be wise to direct his anger in this direction.
