Buying guide for smartphones under 100 euros: best recommendations to hit a cheap mobile –

Although the point of balance between features and price when buying a smartphone are the 200-euro mobiles and the 300-euro models, there are those who are looking for a cheaper phone. Today we set the bar very tight looking for the best phones for less than 100 euros.

Whether as a battle mobile for festivals, events and the like, or for basic users who are going to use it for WhatsApp and little else, choosing such an affordable smartphone can be critical in our experience. However, in this buying guide for cheap phones we help you find your ideal model and we propose some good candidates that these moments can be bought below that barrier.

Cheap smartphone buying guide

Although the cheap concept is subjective and the barrier of 100 euros is an orientation (we always recommend you to be aware of the offers to aspire to more for less money), in such a tight price range our recommendation is that the main criterion is the hardware.

The bottom line: the hardware

For 100 euros or less you will not find a smartphone that is up to the task for multitasking or gaming, but you will find a model that allows you the basics: answer and write WhatsApp, interact on Twitter or Instagram (another thing is the photos you take, whoever warns you is not a traitor), check any questions on the internet or keep up to date with the mail. Eye, not all at once.

Under the hood the processors are extremely basic. Unless you find a bargain, there is no trace of Qualcomm models: the chips you will find belong to the more modest ranges of MediaTek and manufacturer Unisoc.

In RAM and storage we are clear: the more, the better. The goal is to achieve a seamless experience. Although our use is basic, between photos, videos, apps and updates, the available space can become our limiting factor.

It is true that Android Go can give us a break, but applications and processes weigh and “suck”. The minimum for basic use is 2GB of RAM and 32GB of ROM, but if a good offer of 4/64GB comes along, don’t even think about it.

The renewal fever that we observe in the medium and high range is not so high in the most affordable models – which is why you can find terminals from 2020 and even from 2019 –, so a doubt may arise: buy the latest version or go for the previous generation, if it is on sale with more RAM and storage? Better the latest model. Ricardo Aguilar, an editor specializing in telephony, explains it fabledly:

“It is always preferable to buy the most current model, since there are many details that are not seen in the technical sheet. It may have the same amount of memory, but it will be faster and less power intensive. A new generation processor will also respond better to new updates, increasing the life of the product. There are also little known improvements, like the ISP (image signal processor) of the newer processors, they process the photos better and we get better results.”

It ends with something that we usually overlook: “We cannot forget support either, one more year of updates can be key so that, after using the phone for a few years, we do not run out of access to basic apps. If we talk about cheap mobiles, the newer the better.”

We talked above about OS updates and versions: in this type of phone we will find Android Go, Android or a layer of it customized by the manufacturer. For tastes, the colors, but it is appreciated that it is not loaded with extras that add ballast to the hardware and remember that Android Go is optimized to squeeze the most modest hardware.

Everything else

In the most affordable smartphones, the king is plastic, which is not bad news. Of course, always look for a good grip and that they are resistant. They are not going to be the most innovative in design, but those that offer good use of the screen are the most interesting.

In terms of screen, they are usually smaller mobiles compared to the hegemonic trend** towards mobiles that are around (and even exceed 7 inches). However, there is a good range of options around 6.5 inches, a very standard size and suitable for a good experience. All in all, these are modest panels in terms of specifications, something that you will notice in the brightness they deliver, color rendering and pixel density, with HD + as the maximum resolution.

Among the most basic users and those who want a battle phone another highly desired feature is the autonomy: In general, they have batteries with enough mAh, but the efficiency of the processor, the size of the screen and the software optimization also have their weight.

And the photos? Yes, they do have a camera, but it is somewhat testimonial: sometimes even with the most favorable conditions of lighting and movement, that is, in broad daylight and standing still, we are not going to get good results in terms of naturalness and reproduction of details. But if you are looking for a phone of 100 euros, we are clear that this goes into the background. All in all, there are those with a double rear camera, an extra that, although it probably does not translate into more quality, does offer more versatility with portrait mode.
